For Book Clubs
The Binding is excellent for book groups because of the many important topics it touches on and the numerous questions it poses. Here are some to start you thinking:
In The Binding we have three main characters, Wolff Blumen, Dave Razkowski and Al Logan, three sons and therefore three families, three "bindings." Are the differences or similarities of these three men more important? Is their common history, their varying experiences or their personalities the key to their responses?
The title of The Binding recalls the Biblical story of Isaac and Abraham, a son bound by his father in the literal sense, but also by the strength of his experiences and beliefs. Does the novel, The Binding, parallel this central Biblical metaphor? Does The Binding depart radically from the Biblical story?
Why did Brenda Barrie choose men, sons, as the main characters in The Binding? Do you think daughters of Holocaust survivors might differ dramatically in their responses to their parents' experiences?
Do you think that in times to come the Holocaust will become a central metaphor for the Jewish people, on a par with Biblical stories? Has that already happened?
In what way does modern communication, rather than the early spoken and written word of the Bible, make it more or less likely for an event to become a central idea, animating the identity of a People? We are now at the second and third generations past the original survivors of the Holocaust. What remembrance do we owe the past? And what remembrance do we owe the future?
